Day 279 July 20 West Point to Newburgh Beacon Bridge

Our day continues...getting warmer.....no signs of thunderstorms so I guess the Dutch goblin is really being nice to us....
It is so interesting to go by West Point on the water after visiting the other day.....we actually remember the different areas...

West Point Academy Dock

Senior Officer Housing

Educational Campus

New Library

Sailing Center

The narrow section of the river just north of the Academy, designated as World's End, is the deepest section of the entire river with one spot charted at 175-feet deep.  We didn't find the spot.

Constitution Island the first place George Washington chose to fortify at West Point.  Unfortunately, the British had the same idea and established a stronghold in 1777; the Americans won it back a year later.

Athletic Campus....every Cadet MUST participate in one sport

Old Cadet Chapel

BEAT Air Force

Battle Monument

Good by to West Point

Riverfront of Cold Springs

Storm King Mountain, 1355-foot-tall peak, rises above the western shore.  The scenic highway that grids it was completed in 1940.

Pollepel Island is on the eastern shore

It is also known as Bannerman's Island because between 1900 and 1918, Frank Bannerman, ammunition's dealer, built a replica of a medieval castle here as a summer resort

In 1967 the state obtained the property but it burned in 1969

Ruins today and you can not go ashore

Newburgh was a 19th-century seaport and the home of whaling ships
