Day 272 July 13 Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate

Half Moon Bay Marina is in Croton-on-Hudson, NY which is located in the Lower Hudson region.  The Lower Hudson Valley encompasses both Westchester and Rockland counties.  The landscape in this region shifts from the urban cityscapers of Manhattan to the marshes and hills of the Hudson Valley.  Here, a dense concentration of historic sites and estates were built by wealthy enterepreneurs.  Most of the historic sites you see today were preserved for the public through the generosity of the Rockefeller family.
By train we are less than 30 minutes from the city so many that live here....work in the city....
We have rented a car to see the sights

Our first stop is Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate located in Sleepy Hollow NY.
Kykuit, a Classical Revival-style villa, was completed in 1913 for John D Rockefeller, founder of the Standard Oil Company.  In later years, it was the home of his son, philanthropist John D Rockeffer Jr, and grandson, Nelson A Rockefeller, four-time governor of New York and vice president under Gerald Ford.
Today Happy Rockefeller, 87 years old, lives on the grounds and David Rockefeller, 98 years old, also has a house on the grounds.
Our tour was of the first floor of the house, no pictures allowed, and the many gardens on the property.
