Day 367 July 25 37 mi Desmasdon's Boat Works Point Au Baril Station ON

Lines are cast off at 7:20AM.....hoping for a smooth trip from Killbear Marina to Byng Inlet.  We have open water on Georgian Bay to contend with....

Nice Ship Store

Great Restaurant

The floating tire breakwall is very interesting....Think of all the used tires laying around that you have to pay someone to haul away......You could go into business!

We follow the main small-craft route except for the narrow Canoe Channel (unsuitable for the Nanseann).  Instead we take the alternate route south and go between Squaw Island and The Pancakes.....then rejoin the main route at Jane Island....

The Wind...The Wind...The Wind is higher than we expected as we near Georgian Bay.  Once we are inside Franklin Island will be on our port (so is Georgian Bay) but we will be protected.....

We are in the middle of nowhere....the only way to these cottages is by boat....where do they keep their boat....how far away is their car.....what do they do out here......Lots of questions but few answers.....They are hardy folks.

You hear the echoes of the YWCA summer camp where, in the early 1900s,
young ladies wearing long dresses were delivered by steamship

Canada Parks Headquarters

The Ojibway Club, a private club for area cottagers

Shawanago Inlet to Pointe Au Baril

Want to climb to the top

Pointe Au Baril Lighthouse featuring the life of the local lighthouse keepers

We are too big to dock

We pass the Lighthouse and the wind is really picking up....not a good sign for someone wanting to go out on Georgian Bay for 12 miles

We make two attempts.....no way Captain....turn this boat around....we go back inside and wait awhile trying to figure out where we might hang our hat tonight.
Two more boats try it......they change their minds too...
One takes the small-craft route...really think they have a loose screw....don't know what happened to the sailboat.....
We can't take the small-craft route.....we are too big.....for Hangdog Channel and besides most of it is on open water in Georgian Bay......
We decide to go back and go to Point Au Baril Station, about six miles up the inlet, and stay at the public docks....

Point Au Baril Station is a compact village that was once a rail and steamboat center but now the name of the game is tourism.....serving a large cottage community that is mostly water-based (few cottages have road access)

One picture coming up the inlet....tomorrow....settling my nerves

Public dock is full.....three looper boats....no room at the Inn...

We stay at Desmasdon's Boat Works.....They only take up to 30 feet but welcome us today.....Captain has to pay for two boats ($30 per boat) but we are docked....no water....no dumpster.....and 15 AMP hydro.....but Saddi can get off the boat.... What we do for our little girl.....
You can get a pumpout at the public dock on Saturday from 9 to 12noon......

Water Taxi taking guests to their cottages

Ship Store but they sell ice cream and have WiFi

This is "The Center" for cottage traffic

Public Docks with the Looper Boats

Barge comes in at the end of the day...are we in the Bahamas

Boats are stored in Dry storage and when the owners come to their cottage the staff brings the boat to the dock.....loads the boat with their stuff and off the people go to their cottage at FULL SPEED......they do not know what NO WAKE means

We had an interesting day watching all the cottagers come in for the weekend....and waiting for them to go home for cocktails....so the inlet would quiet down......
Steaks on the grill.....run the generator.....and hope for NO wind tomorrow morning....
