You do realize it is raining....

Is this a good idea ?????

Lock 1 can only handle two boats

We wait on the blue wall which indicates we are ready to lock through

Lock 1  Trenton  Mile 1.8 with a 20 foot lift

This is known as the "Greenhorn" lock

Lock 2  Sidney Mile 2.4 with a 19 foot lift

Jennifer's first day....This is the story....
Three years ago staff was cut back due to the economy.  Lockmasters no longer lived at the locks and tended just one lock.  They were required to travel between locks to move the boats faster.  Who wants a boater to complain?  This summer staff has been increased.....locks have trainees and today is their first day on duty.  They do not get to push any buttons...just manually raise and lower the locks....

We have a vertical lift of 370 feet in the first 50 miles

Lock 3  Glen Miller Mile 3.8 with a 28 foot lift

Wait for the lockmaster to open the gate

coming out of the lock....with a manual opening

The canal is much higher than the river

Two conventional locks are joined in a "flight" of locks to handle the large change in water levels.  Boats are lifted and lowered simultaneously, as the water from the downbound lock feeds into the upbound cavern.
