Day 342 June 30 Tip of the Bay Marina Picton ON

Prince Edward County was formerly a peninsula, but the construction of the Murray Canal in 1889 effectively severed it from the mainland creating an island surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of white sand beaches and the world's largest freshwater sandbar and dunes system.  Bordered by the Bay of Quinte on the north and Lake Ontario on the south, it is commonly referred to as "The County."

Lunch at Acoustic Grill

Must stop.....lots of "stuff"

Who is steering...the man or the dog????

Walked uphill to Picton "downtown" this morning before the afternoon heat arrived.....busy place with lots of traffic and people.  Everyone is coming to "The County" for Canada Day.....
Back to the boat when Santa Claus arrived with "wheels".  Our friend Horst is staying  at the Belleville Marina and he was able to rent a car.....none in Picton by the way.....
We have two stops that are "musts" when you are in this area...
First is The Lake on the Mountain....10 miles away....

Lake on the Mountain has tantalized imaginations for centuries...bottomless

Meg in front of "The Inn" restaurant

Cabins on the lake....how neat

Bar busy at "The Inn"

All part of Lake on the Mountain Resort

The Miller House Café-Brasserie

Breathtaking views of the Bay of Quinte 200 feet below

Several bedrooms to rent

Enjoying the day

So glad we were able to visit Lake on the Mountain Resort

Our second "must" stop was Sandbanks Provincial Park on Lake Ontario.  This is the largest freshwater baymouth sand dune system in the world.  Sandbanks contain dunes that soar as high as 25 m.

Walk the long stretches of clean, fine white sand

Captain could pour sand from his shoes

What a pair

Horst our "Santa Claus"

Are they having "fireworks" Jimmy

Horst, Rik, Meg and Jimmy

These were the two things we wanted to do but without a car the walk was uphill and too far......Thanks Horst for coming to our rescue, driving us around the countryside....This is a place you would like to come back and visit.

We stopped at Gus' in Picton for dinner and then the four of us walked downhill to the marina and Horst headed back to Belleville to his boat.
