Day 221 May 23 62 mi Morehead City Yacht Basin Morehead City NC

Thursday 6:30 AM departure......leaving Harbor Village Marina face dock in a light rain.  Left-overs from Joseph's Italian Bistro were enjoyed last night for dinner.

Club house and face dock

The Surf City Swing Bridge operates from 7AM to 7PM with openings on the hour/half-hour.  We are 5.5 miles from the bridge so let's move Captain.

Another Mainship is waiting for the Bridge Tender to open

At 7AM the bridge opens and off we go

It is hard to believe....this is Memorial Weekend 2013 and we are on the North Carolina ICW.  We need to arrive at Morehead City today to avoid the "boat maggots" which will invade the waterways tomorrow.  We are in the middle of the most popular NC Beach Resort areas.....Carolina Beach, which is wall-to-wall house and condos; Wrightsville Beach, which is one of North Carolina's most popular area and now Topsail Island which almost became Cape Canaveral.  I'm sure everyone in NC has a waterfront property.

The ICW follows a narrow, canal-like passage to New River.  Swift currents flow into and out of the many shallow seaward cuts along the eastern shore.

Think you could find your way home

Commercial watermen sometimes wade rather than work from their boats, and often the workboats are deliberately grounded on tiny islets.  Less than two feet of water out there.

Raking for clams....I want to do that...

I like clams

WARNING!!!!!!!
From Stm 245 to Stm 235 belongs to the US Marine Corps.  This is a restricted area and we see signs that tell us that.....The ICW runs through a portion of the huge Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base.  Now, the marines sometimes use the waterway's southeastern shore for a target range.  When practice is underway, the Marine Corps post warning boats on either end of the shelling area.

Camp Lejeune......getting ready for a Memorial Day PARTY

The Onslow Beach Bridge is 12 foot and opens on the hour/half-hour.....we had to wait 14 minutes...the navigator wasn't on top of the schedule.....But there was an interesting note on the I-pad about this bridge.  According to the bridge tender, if you are not at the bridge at the time of opening the Marine Corps regs says he cannot delay the opening or hold the bridge open for even 30 seconds extra!!!!

Do you think the bridge tender is a Marine?

Swings toward us

No patrol boat today

Bogue Sound which we will travel for almost 25 miles to Morehead City

Swansboro is known as "The Friendly City by the Sea"
You find a picturesque Colonial port built on fishing and boatbuilding.

You could buy this and have your own island

Interesting look home on Bogue Sound
