Day 213-214 May 15-16 Beaufort South Carolina

Beaufort is a vibrant water-front town, with beautiful architecture dating to the 1700s.  It's the second oldest city in South Carolina and like Charleston, was largely saved from the physical destruction of the Civil War.
We spent a day with Bob and Marva Lee who live in the area.  They drove over to buy our lunch and to give us a personal guided tour.  Pretty nice.

The blue is Gullah to ward off evil spirits

St Helena Episcopal Church Cemetery dating back to the 1700s

Church was used by Union troops for a hospital during the Civil War

Beautiful Organ upstairs

Old records note the burial of a man named Perry who, in great fear of being buried alive, instructed his friends to place a jug of water, a loaf of bread, and a hatchet in his coffin.  If he regained consciousness, he could then stave off hunger and thirst while chopping his way out.

With that in mind we had a late lunch and visited

Nice Sunset...water was chop chop chop

Since we didn't stop in Savannah and will not stop in Charleston and it is our first time in Beaufort we felt we should take our time and wander the streets of Beaufort.
Wednesday we took a Carriage Ride of the Historic Homes.  Our driver Deb and our horse Buck have been working together for seven years......
