Lake Worth is known as Palm Beach's mudhole. They say that a Confederate deserter fleeing as far south as present-day Palm Beach dug a connection to the ocean with a conch shell. But truth of the matter was Henry Flagler realized a sheltered ocean access would make Palm Beach even more attractive and so in 1877 a stable inlet was completed, then deepened and widened over the next few decades. As Flagler intended Lake Worth is now full of luxury yachts with easy ocean access. We are traveling north from the inlet (the southern route...another day) Captain says "you'll see enough"!!!!!

Jupiter Inlet
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was a tough project back in 1850. Imagine trying to build this structure in the middle of a jungle, without a Lowes, swarms of biting insects and Indians raiding the site. Over 500 tons of material were brought to the site, but back then the inlet was too shallow for navigation. So supplies were unloaded from larger sailing vessels at the Indian River and ferried using small shallow-draft boats. To add insult to injury, as the lighthouse was completed some Confederate raiders hid the Fresnel lens as an attempt to confuse blockading Union ships. At the end of the Civil War, the lighthouse keeper conveniently found the lens, buried in Jupiter Creek.
Today the bright red lighthouse is open to the public.
You can climb its 105 steps for $6

The Jove Indians whose name the Spanish pronounced "Ho-bay", gave Hobe Sound its name. A highly exclusive area shows off many of its grand mansions and manicured lawns along the eastern shore of the channel....known as Jupiter Island. The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge dominates the western shore of the sound.
The county enforces a four-story building height level in this area
Bet you need a permit to get on Jupiter Island

St. Lucie Inlet is known as the four-way intersection....simply "The Crossroads".... St. Lucie Inlet to the east.....The St. Lucie River turns off to the west and connects to the Okeechobee Waterway and Ft. Myers on the Gulf Coast .....and the ICW continues north. When Rik brought the boat up the rivers in 2010 this was the inlet he entered and then continued west on the river.
