Very nice marina with the exception of a laundry on site. Two courtesy cars available as there are many Looper's here visiting.....
Special day in the Captains' life....9-9-89.......twenty-five years ago Rik stopped smoking.....he wanted to do some things in his life.....wonder if he thought he would be on the Great American Loop.....
Interesting Fact - It's a tricky process when splitting barges....The towboat pushes the forward set of barges into the lock. The barges within the chamber are unlashed from the tow and the towboat backs away. This first set of barges, now without auxiliary power, is called the "break." Two deckhands remain onboard the break, locking though within the chamber.
After the locking, the break barges must be removed from the chamber. They commonly use a mechanical "mule," which is anchored to the lock wall and winches the barges out.
Once clear of the chamber, 600 feet of engineless barge wait along the riverbank, free-floating except for the ropes and cables manned by the deckhands. When the towboat and remaining barges lock through, the original configuration is re-lashed and the tow proceeds down the river......
Ottawa hosted the first of the Lincoln-Douglas debates on slavery. It was held at Ottawa's Washington Square and they had over 4000 listeners.

There are 17 Looper Boats at Heritage Harbor Marina.....We are in the group that will leave very early because we are headed to the Peoria area. Some of the slower boats will have to anchor out before getting to the Peoria area and some are staying another day.
We had a report there were 18 Looper Boats at Grafton waiting for the locks on the Ohio River to clear some 30 barges......Oh the life of Boat Bums
