With a population of 2,200 it has been a summer resort town since the 1890s and early 1900s when as many as seven trains a day from New York City stopped here. Tour boats and steamers vied for space at the town docks to take tourists to the islands.
On weekends, private launches carried city businessmen to join their families summering at island cottages on the river.
