Headed for Lock 23 on the Erie Canal
The Erie Canal has been used since the end of the 1700s for transportation and was completed in 1825. Last summer we traveled the Eastern Erie Canal from Troy NY on the Hudson River to Brewerton NY on the Oneida River.
We decided not to travel the Western Erie Canal to Buffalo due to a 15'5" bridge which we can not get under without taking the bridge down. Don't thing that will happen!!!!
Coming into Lock 23
Last Dance
Last lock for us on the Erie Canal
Do you think they sit in the pink chairs and look at the 3 pink pots
We are headed for the Oswego Canal which started construction in 1826 from Syracuse NY on the Erie Canal to Oswego on Lake Ontario. They opened for traffic in 1828. Today the canal has a controlled depth of 6 feet and a controlled height of 22 feet. It is 24 miles long and has 7 locks.
From the Three Rivers Point (mile 160 on the Erie Canal) the Oswego Canal drops from 363 feet above sea level to 245 feet above sea level at Lake Ontario in 7 steps.
