Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area but it is still the 14th largest lake in the world.  It is almost 175 nautical miles long and 46 miles wide at its broadest point.  Lake depths range from 100 to 800 feet offshore.  Its shoreline totals 620 miles and is part of the international boundary between the United States and Canada.

The St Lawrence River

The St Lawrence River begins at the Thousand Islands.  Actually numbering 1,800, they fill an area 15 miles wide at the Lake Ontario end, tapering to five miles over a downstream distance of about 5o miles.  Because these islands were once mountain peaks, water depths between them can change abruptly from more than 50 feet to nothing.
