where are the people this morning
Nice visit to Frankfort MI
We are @ a mile off the shoreline today with scattered fog
Golf course with large clubhouse
Big Sable Point
Pere Marquette State Park with a busy beach
Lots of sand dunes.....few houses
We have arrived at the southeastern shore of Lake Michigan which covers the harbors from Ludington, south to Burns Harbor at the southern most end of Lake Michigan. The area can best be described as summer cottage/seashore community.
Ludington summer cottages
Ludington harbor is well marked and protected
This harbor is used by large ore ships as well as pleasure craft
Coast Guard Station looks like the one in Frankfort but smaller
Neat complex on the harbor
Ludington is located on the north shore of Pere Marquette Lake
One of the "larger" ships in for the day
Ludington Harbor View Marina with floating docks is our stop
One of the large ships that comes into port twice a day is the 1951 SS Badger, a large 410-foot car ferry that operates between Ludington and Manitaowac WI. The SS Badger and its boilers are registered historical sites in both Michigan and Wisconsin, as she has been sailing for almost 60 years. Under fire from the EPA to cease discharge of her coal ashes into Lake Michigan by the end of 2012, she converted from coal to propane in the winter of 2011.
We have front row seats
Captain turns her around
and backs into the dock
No wave action.....there she goes
drops the achor
Unload and load the passengers and vehicles
Harbor patrol coming at full speed
Fire trucks......small fire on a boat....out before they got here
Back to the SS Badger as she departs the port
Our sunset this evening
Lake Michigan was lumpy today as we had falling seas......but the Captain did a great job, Saddi slept and it wasn't a picture taking day.
We have cruised 1031 miles this season and 162 miles down Lake Michigan. We are over half-way to Chicago.
