Monday, we are off to see the lighthouse in Saugerties.  The lighthouse built in 1869 marks the entrance to Esopus Creek, the harbor for Saugerties.  It has been restored and is a B & B but the public can walk out to see it up close....you just can't go inside....

  

 

1/2 mile walk with Tidal waters so you want to visit at low tide

Day 286 July 27 The Catskills

 

Today we are touring the Upper Hudson where New Yorkers come for winter getaways......Our loop along Route 23 and 23A covers the Catskills that Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 struck with heavy rainfall, high winds and severe flooding.  Clean up effects are still in progress.....And yes, Miss Saddi is ready for another day on the road..

The Esopus Creek empties into the Hudson at Saugerties.  Water rushing out of the mountains once powered a mill that led the town to the forefront of the paper industry.

Day 285 July 26 Catskill Mountains

Route 28 West out of Kingston leads to the Ashokan Reservoir, the southern Catskill Mountains and many of the old resorts that made the region world famous.  Today is our day for this adventure and Miss Saddi is going with us.  The Captain has covered the back seat with sheets because we have black interior....not that Saddi minds

Pepacton Reservoir was completed in 1955.  With a capacity of 140.2 billion gallons of water, the Pepacton is the largest reservoir in the NYC watershed and provides about 25% of the total supply.

 

 

The lake covers 15 miles and 7,500 acres and is full of brown trout that average about 5 pounds Fred.  Fishing and rowboats are allowed but no swimming or motorboats.

Checking the stream.....The Western Catskills are once again in vogue.  The market for second homes is booming and the forgotten towns are getting makeovers with artists and chefs.  Fly-fishing is big here from April - June and September - October

Route 17 to Ellenville where we find a McDonalds....Saddi is starving

Minnewaska State Park opened in 1987.  The elevation is about 2000 feet and hikers have many choices.  The lots were full, no picnic areas so we had McDonalds at the beginning of a trail head.  Saddi's chicken nuggets were gone in a second......
